That was some expensive stickwork.  Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin has been fined $5,000 for slashing Logan Stanley of the Winnipeg Jets.

The incident took place at 15:37 of the second period of Saturday’s game in Winnipeg.  With the two players battling behind the Jets’ net, Stanley delivered a series of unpenalized crosschecks to Malkin’s back. The Pittsburgh forward retaliated with a two-handed slash.

Malkin was assessed a minor penalty for slashing by referees Jon McIsaac and Riley Brace.

This is Malkin’s second slashing fine in the past year. Last November, he was charged $5,000 for a slash on Nikita Zadorov of the Boston Bruins.  He’s been in trouble for his stick in the past. Malkin was suspended four games for cross-checking Nashville Predators’ blueliner Mark Borowiecki back in 2022, and one game for high sticking Michael Raffl in 2019.  He also picked up a $5,000 fine for high-sticking Ottawa’s Jean-Gabriel Pageau in 2019.

Malkin’s fine is the maximum allowable under the NHL/NHLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement without a formal hearing.  The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

The Winnipeg Jets defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-2. Officials for the game were referees Jon McIsaac (#2) and Riley Brace (#49) with Dylan Blujus (#57) and Kiel Murchison (#79) on the lines.
