The United States Hockey League kicks off the 2023-24 season on September 20 with a new boss: former NHL linesman John Grandt was recently named the USHL’s Director of Officiating.

The USHL not only is a development path for players and coaches but has served as a training ground for the development of on-ice officials. Working closely with USA Hockey’s Officiating Development Program, the USHL has advanced more than 600 officials to professional, collegiate, and international levels of hockey.
A total of 22 former USHL on-ice officials have earned a contract to work in the National Hockey League — David Banfield, Jacob Brenk, Tom Chmielewski, Chris Ciamaga, Ryan Daisy, Harry Dumas, John Grandt, Beaudry Halkidis, Mitchell Hunt, Justin Kea, Mark Lemelin, Brian Mach, Peter MacDougall, Kilian McNamara, CJ Murray, Bryan Pancich, Brian Pochmara, Chris Rooney, Jordan Samuels-Thomas, Furman South, Ian Walsh, and Scott Zelkin.
