The penalties were piling up late in Game 1 between the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs.   Referee Garrett Rank had the tough task of calling – and recounting – them all.

In an attempt to make sure he didn’t miss anyone, Rank went ahead and read them off from his riot pad.

If you’re scoring at home, that’s the original high-sticking call to Toronto’s 89 Nick Robertson and a roughing penalty on Matthew Highmore.  Additional roughing calls to the Leafs: Benoit, Domi, Carlo, McMann, and two more to Robertson. Ottawa’s penalties on the play – all roughing: Matinpalo, Highmore, Amadio, Gaudette, Kleven, and Gaudette.

The game finished with 56 minutes in penalties – 38 of those against the Ottawa Senators.

Of course, Rank has taken a more efficient approach in the past.  Last season, Rank called a penalty on “every player on the ice.”

Referee Garrett Rank Calls Penalty on “Every Player On The Ice”

Now, he’s calling ’em out by number.

The Toronto Maple Leafs went on to win the game 6-2. Officials for the game were referees Garrett Rank (#7) and Brian Pochmara (#16) with linespersons Steve Barton (#59) and Tyson Baker (#88).  Game two is Tuesday.
