NHL Referee Dean Morton knows the difference between hooking and holding. Or so we think.

The veteran official, in his 20th season, has undoubtedly sent plenty of players to the box for both penalties.  During Tuesday night’s game between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Montreal Canadiens, it wasn’t immediately clear why the Jackets’ Zach Werenski was heading to the box — at least based on the referee’s hand signal.

“He’s a bit mixed up with his signals,” exclaimed the Habs’ broadcast team as the official skated away, shaking his head.

Morty began the call with the signal for holding before smoothly transitioning into a hook.  Nice save, ref.

On a side note, that’s a sweet ‘stache Morton’s sporting for Movember
