Florida Panthers head coach Paul Maurice posted a cheat sheet of the officials’ names – with a reminder – behind the bench during Sunday’s game against the New York Rangers.
Maurice wanted to be able to address the officials – referees Corey Syvret and Frederick L’Ecuyer with lineys Scott Cherrey and Jesse Marquis – should any issues come up during the game. He also left himself a note to keep himself in check.
It worked. The Panthers stayed out of the box for the most part, going shorthanded just once in the game, and Maurice avoided picking up any penalties during his exchanges with the officials.
This isn’t new for Maurice; he had the same note during last spring’s playoff run.
Plenty of teams have taken a similar approach… though none with a four-letter reminder to keep quiet.
That’s probably justified. Maurice has been fined $30,000 over the years for comments directed towards the officials.
