The AHL’s Milwaukee Admirals put the puck past Chicago Wolves goaltender Cayden Primeau to tie the game — only to have the goal called back for a kick.
Admirals forward David Edstrom deflected a shot from Jordan Oesterle into the net, knotting things up at 4-4 with a minute to play.
The officials huddled, opting to take a second look at the play to confirm the legality of the goal. Unlike the NHL, reviews in the American Hockey League are handled by the on-ice officials. Refs Shaun Davis and Ibrahim Arifi spent over three minutes poring over the game footage on the tablet in the penalty box.
It wasn’t initially clear why the play was being reviewed. The puck never left the attacking zone for an offside and there was no contact with the goaltender prior to the goal. Only when the ruling was announced over the PA system was it clear: the puck was ruled to have been kicked in by Edstrom.
Officials for the game were refs Shaun Davis (#31) and Ibrahim Arifi (#68) with linespersons Craig Ford (#70) and Luke Pye (#42)
