Pittsburgh Penguins winger Avery Hayes was taken out by linesperson Steve Barton during Saturday’s game against the New York Rangers.

The play came early in the first period. Hayes and Rangers defenseman Scott Morrow were battling for a loose puck in front of the benches. Hayes picked up speed along the boards, only to run into Barton who had hopped up on the dasher to avoid contact.

It didn’t help.

Avery crashed to the ice as Barton was knocked into the Blueshirts’ bench. The liney popped right back up and signaled for a good zone entry.

Barton is in his 25th NHL season, having worked 1,656 regular season games along with 159 playoff matches.

Officials for Rangers vs. Penguins were referees Gord Dwyer (#19) and Kelly Sutherland (#11) with linespersons Steve Barton (#59) and Andrew Smith (#51).
