NHL referee Wes McCauley stopped to sign an autograph prior to Tuesday’s game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.

NHL Referee Wes McCauley prepares to sign a referee jersey outside Madison Square Garden on Octobr 7, 2025
It’s not clear if that’s actually a #4 NHL referee jersey or just another officiating jersey that happens to be #4. Either way, these guys were prepared.
(We’re hoping those guys checked our daily lineup to know Wes was working the game… Though they missed an opportunity to get the rest of the crew, including liney Devin Berg, standing in the background with his luggage and coffee.)
The moment was captured by Chris, a Rangers fan attending the game, who offered McCauley some advice: “Try not to mess it up tonight!”
“I’ll try not to,” McCauley responded.
The veteran official called the first two penalties of Tuesday’s game – the first on the Penguins’ Harrison Brunicke and the second on Rangers defenseman Adam Fox. There was only one additional penalty handed out: a tripping call on Pittsburgh’s Kris Letang that was made by ref Jake Brenk.
The Rangers fell to the Penguins by a score of 3-0. Refs for the game were Wes McCauley (#4) and Jake Brenk (#26), with Devin Berg (#87) and Libor Suchanek (#60) on the lines.
