We had some old school hockey in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) on Saturday with a near-line brawl breaking out on the ice.
The action picked up with just over five minutes remaining in the second period, Sherbrooke leading 2-0.
Phoenix forward Mavrik Lachance and Remparts defenseman Alexandre Taillefer were the first to drop the gloves. As the officials worked to break them up, others squared off to scrap.
Quebec’s Maddox Dagenais and Freddy Meyer picked up additional penalties for fighting after the original altercation, as did Sherbrooke’s Cameron Haye and Jean-Félix Lapointe.
Those four also picked up one-game suspensions.
The QMJHL increased penalties for fighting beginning with the 2023-24 season, requiring that players receiving a fighting major also pick up a game misconduct penalty. Obviously, that wasn’t enough to deter these guys from dropping the gloves.
The Sherbrooke Phoenix went on to defeat the Quebec Remparts 2-1. Officials for the game were referees Mathieu Binette (#18) and Marc-Antoine Chagnon (#32) with linesmen Antoine Leblanc (#80) and Félix-Antoine Voyer (#89).
