We’ve made it to the Stanley Cup Finals. The two best teams in the National Hockey League will face off for the opportunity to hoist Lord Stanley’s Cup. The NHL has whittled it down to their top eight officials – four referees and four linespersons – to work the championship series.
Here are the officials for the Stanley Cup Final between the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers:
Referees
- Francis Charron (#6) – 3rd Stanley Cup Final (2020, 2021)
- Jean Hebert (#15) – 3rd Stanley Cup Final (2022, 2024)
- Wes McCauley (#4) – 11th Stanley Cup Final (2013-2020, 2022, 2023)
- Chris Rooney (#5) – 8th Stanley Cup Final (2012, 2013, 2018, 2019, 2022-2024)
First-Timers: None.
Back Again: Hebert and Rooney are returning from the 2024 Stanley Cup Final.
Out from Conference Finals: Eric Furlatt, Dan O’Rourke, Garrett Rank, Kelly Sutherland.
Linespersons
- Devin Berg (#87) – 2nd Stanley Cup Final (2024)
- Scott Cherrey (#50) – 6th Stanley Cup Final (2017, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2023)
- Ryan Gibbons (#58) – First Stanley Cup Final
- Trent Knorr (#74) – First Stanley Cup Final
First-Timers: Ryan Gibbons and Trent Knorr are both working their first Stanley Cup Final. Gibbons has handled four prior Conference Finals (2018, 2021, 2022, 2024), while Knorr previously made it as far as the Conference Finals in 2019.
Back Again: Berg is the only liney returning from last year’s Cup Final.
Out from Conference Finals: Ryan Daisy, Matt MacPherson, Bevan Mills, Jonny Murray
Losing Experience
Some of the most experienced officials – especially when it comes to the Stanley Cup Final – have missed the cut to advance. Referee Kelly Sutherland is the active leader among refs with 252 playoff games, 10 Cup Finals, and 27 Cup Final games, with Dan O’Rourke close behind at seven Finals and 19 Cup Final games. Linesperson Jonny Murray leads all active lineys with seven trips to the final and 19 games worked. All three are sidelined for this year’s Stanley Cup Final.
New to the Crew
All of the referees advancing have previously worked the Stanley Cup Final. On the lines, Ryan Gibbons and Trent Knorr are making their Cup Final debuts.
Splitting Pairs
The pair of Wes McCauley and Francis Charron have both advanced, while Jean Hebert (Garrett Rank) and Chris Rooney (Dan O’Rourke) will have new partners in the Final. The pairing of Kelly Sutherland and Eric Furlatt (FLA/CAR Game 1, DAL/EDM Game 3) saw both officials fail to move on.
Injury Updates
Referee Chris Rooney was injured at Game 7 of Leafs/Panthers, but made it back for the Conference Finals and has moved on to his eighth Cup Final.
Career Numbers
Wes McCauley‘s 216 playoff games are seventh-best, all time, with Chris Rooney tied for 13th with 180. Jean Hebert has 112 playoff appearances, while Francis Charron is at 101.
On the lines, Scott Cherrey is the veteran of this team with 168 playoff games, 24th-most all-time. Devin Berg has 86, Ryan Gibbons at 81, and Trent Knorr with 39.
Playoff Paychecks
Each one of the refs working the Stanley Cup Final has secured themselves a cumulative playoff bonus of $120,000, having earned $30,000 for each round. Final Linespersons have racked up $76,000 by advancing through four round of the playoffs.
Officials get paid per round in the postseason, with referees earning $30,000 and linespersons $19,000 each round in the 2025 playoffs. Standby referees earn $1,000 for being on call, with an increase to $2,750 if they get into the game; linespersons on standby pick up a $650 check which bumps to $1,775 if they take the ice.
Congratulations to the NHL officials selected to work the 2025 Stanley Cup Final!
