Buffalo Sabres defenseman Bowen Byram has been fined $5000 for interference after a late hit on Angus Crookshank of the Ottawa Senators.

The Sabres’ newly-acquired defenseman turned the puck over, coughing it up to Crookshank along the boards deep in the Buffalo zone.  The Sens’ winger moved the puck to defenseman Jakob Chychrun at the point, then headed toward the slot. Byram drilled Crookshank with a late hit.

Referees Brandon Schrader and Pierre Lambert whistled Byram a minor penalty for interference.   Crookshank left the game for evaluation; he returned to the ice in the second period.

Byram’s fine is the maximum allowable under the NHL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement without a formal hearing.

The Ottawa Senators went on to defeat the Buffalo Sabres 6-2. Referees for the game were Brandon Schrader (#34) and Pierre Lambert (#37), with linespersons Travis Toomey (#90) and Bryan Pancich (#94).
