The USHL has suspended Omaha Lancers defenseman David Posma for 17 games for slashing Sioux City forward Kaden Shahan.
The incident came in the final minute of last Friday’s game. With their goaltender pulled for an extra attacker, the Lancers won an offensive zone faceoff. The puck moved back to Posma, who turned it over to Shahan. As the Musketeers forward headed toward the empty net, Posma tripped him up at the blue line before delivering three hard slashes.
Referee Ryan Siegel awarded a goal on the play, based on a foul from behind on a a breakaway while facing an empty net. Posma was also issued two minor penalties: one for tripping and one for slashing.
This is Posma’s second suspension in just ten games this season with the Lancers. He previously sat for three games for head contact during a January 5 game against the Youngstown Phantoms.
Through ten games, Posma has no goals and four assists, along with 83 penalty minutes. He’s ranked second in the league with an average of 8.3 penalty minutes per game.
Posma’s 17-game ban is the longest suspension handed down in the USHL this season, as well as the longest over the past five seasons. The USHL has issued 83 suspensions so far this season to 65 different players, totaling 134 games. Posma’s 20 are at the front of the pack.
