Edmonton Oilers’ forward Zach Hyman scored a beautiful goal against the Toronto Maple Leafs, only to have it disallowed after a Coach’s Challenge for offside.

Hyman grabbed a loose puck in the attacking zone and deked around three Leafs players before ripping a backhand from the goal line over the shoulder of Leafs goaltender Martin Jones.

Toronto challenged the play, citing that Edmonton was offside. The Leafs were right.

Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly cleared the puck out of the zone. It hit Edmonton blueliner Evan Bouchard and deflected back into the Leafs’ end, where it was picked up by Hyman.  That’s offside.

From Rule 83.2:

A puck which deflects off an attacking player outside the blue line into the attacking zone, regardless of who originally propelled it or where it was propelled from, shall be ruled off-side or delayed off-side, as appropriate.

Toronto is a perfect 3-for-3 on Coach’s Challenges this season. Since stepping behind the Leafs bench in 2021, head coach Sheldon Keefe and his staff have gone 17-for-20 (85%) in Challenges.

The Oilers have lost three goals to challenges this season: two for offside, and one for goaltender interference.

From the NHL’s Situation Room:

Video review determined the puck left the attacking zone, deflected off Evan Bouchard and re-entered the offensive zone where Zach Hyman played it in an off-side position.

Clock is reset to show 9:02 (10:58 elapsed time), when the off-side infraction occurred.

This is the third disallowed goal by Hyman in the past week.  He had two potential scores waved off against the Chicago Blackhawks last Wednesday.  The first was waved off for goaltender interference; the second, called back after a challenge review ruled that Leon Draisaitl did not have control of the puck when he entered the attacking zone.

The Edmonton Oilers defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2. Referees for the game were Chris Lee (#28) and Steve Kozari (#40), with linesmen Ryan Gibbons (#58) and Travis Toomey (#90).
