The first shorthanded goal in PWHL history – from Toronto’s Emma Maltais – also ended a New York powerplay, thanks to a recent rule change.

With defender Allie Munroe in the box for roughing, Toronto remained aggressive, getting an early scoring chance. The club regrouped and headed back up ice, with Maltais this time converting on a rebound from a shot by Jessie Compher.

The Professional Women’s Hockey League made a major tweak to goals scored shorthanded for their inaugural season:

Minor penalty expiration criteria:

a. Is the Team scored against, short-handed OR did the shorthanded team score?

b. Are they serving a minor penalty on the clock?

c. If the answer is yes to a) and b), delete the minor penalty with the least amount of time on the clock, except when coincidental penalties are being served

Not only did the goal end the penalty, but it was also the game-winner, breaking a 2-2 tie.

Toronto went on to defeat New York 3-2.  Officials for the game were referees Chelsea Rapin (#22) and Samantha Hiller (#12) with linespersons Stephanie Gagnon (#22) and Erin Zach (#60). This was the first all-female officiating crew in PWHL history.
