The CHL/NHL Officiating Development Camp is underway this weekend in Kitchener, Ontario.  The Ontario Hockey League, Western Hockey League, and Quebec Major Junior Hockey League – in partnership with the NHL – are all taking part in a an inter-league camp.

Sixteen officials have been selected to take part: eight from the OHL, and four each from the QMJHL and WHL.  Heading up the mentorship and development are NHL Officiating Director Al Kimmel and NHL Officiating Managers Chris Edwards, Mark Faucette, and Jay Sharrers.

“The Ontario Hockey League is proud to host the 16th CHL/NHL Officials’ Development Camp for the third consecutive year”, said OHL Director of Officiating, Conrad Hache. “Throughout the weekend, selected officials from across the country will have the opportunity to learn, grow, and demonstrate their skills in front of NHL Officiating Managers in attendance. We look forward to watching them on and off the ice, as we continue to enhance all officiating across the CHL.”

The four-day event – running from November 30 to December 3 – will offer officials developmental opportunities on and off the ice, with all officials working games in the Ontario Hockey League.

From the CHL:

The camp offers eight selected CHL referees, and eight selected CHL linesmen the opportunity to participate in various on and off-ice activities with a goal of supporting and enhancing the development of current CHL officials in conjunction with the NHL. Rotating across all three leagues, the seminar is designed to create exposure, opportunity, identification, and development for all officials in attendance.

The annual event makes for some fun – if slightly confusing – moments like this: a WHL ref working a OHL game.

Throughout the CHL/NHL Officiating Development seminar’s 16-year history, over 210 officials have taken part, with 43 going on to work a Memorial Cup, and 24 reaching the NHL.

Congratulations to all participants at this year’s CHL/NHL Officials’ Development Camp.
