New York Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba has been fined $5000 for high-sticking Boston Bruins forward Trent Frederic.
The incident came 2:20 into the second period of Saturday’s game in New York, with the score tied 3-3.
No penalty was called on the play. Frederic was not injured.
Trouba spoke with reporter Vince Mercogliano about the play. From lohud.com:
“The play obviously can’t happen,” Trouba said. “It was 100% accidental. At the time, I was shocked it happened. I immediately said, ‘I apologize. I didn’t have any intention of doing that.’ I felt like my hand was pushed and I was kind of off balance, so I apologized right away. That was kind of the end of it then. Then after the game, I saw a video of it, and it doesn’t look good. It’s not an excusable thing.”
“I have to control my posture and my stick better than that,” Trouba added. “I’m glad he wasn’t injured. I deserve the fine. Take it and move on. Learn from the experience and don’t let it happen again. That’s not the player I want to be.”
Trouba’s fine of $5,000 is the maximum permitted under the league’s CBA without a formal hearing.
The Rangers’ defenseman is making $8 million this season, which works out to about $97,560 per game. With an average time on ice of 22:42 per game, the Blueshirts’ blueliner takes home about $4,316 per minute he’s actually on the ice.
The Rangers won 7-4. Referees for the game were Francis Charron (#6) and Jordan Samuels-Thomas (#42), with linesmen Ryan Daisy (#81) and Devin Berg (#87).
