Calgary Flames defenseman MacKenzie Weegar threw everything he had to prevent a goal by the Nashville Predators… including his stick – picking up a penalty and penalty shot on the same shift.
Weegar was whistled for holding Preds winger Kiefer Sherwood. As play continued, the Predators moved into the Flames’ zone on a 2-on-1. With Weegar unable to catch up, he threw his stick to break up a cross-ice pass. Weegar’s attempt was successful, with his sliding stick deflecting the pass, potentially preventing a goal.

Too bad that wasn’t a legal play.
Referees Dan O’Rourke and Cody Beach awarded the Predators with a penalty shot. Nashville’s Sherwood failed to convert.
Weegar’s stick throw is covered under rule 53.7:
When any member of the defending team … throws or shoots any part of a stick or any other object or piece of equipment at the puck or puck carrier in his defending zone, the Referee or Linesperson shall allow the play to be completed and if a goal is not scored, a penalty shot shall be awarded to the non-offending team.
Calgary Flames head coach Ryan Huska was not impressed by his defenseman’s desperate move.
“You don’t have to do stuff like that,” Huska said. “I get it, but you don’t have to do it.”
The Flames fell to the Predators 4-2. Referees for the game were Dan O’Rourke (#9) and Cody Beach (#45), linesmen were Tyson Baker (#88) and Julien Fournier (#86).
