Refs Chris Rooney and Kelly Sutherland are paired up for the first time this postseason. Rooney worked Game 2 of this series with ref Steve Kozari (VGK W 7-2); Game 2’s 148 penalty minutes were the most handed out in these playoffs. Sutherland handled Game 3 with Dan O’Rourke (FLA W 3-2 OT).
This pairing hands out fewer power plays than most of the NHL officials – both in the regular season and in the playoffs – resulting in a lower PPG-per-game and lower goals-per-game overall. Their penalty minute totals are padded a bit by matching minors and misconduct penalties.
The Florida Panthers are a combined 5-1 this postseason under tonight’s refs, while the Vegas Golden Knights are 4-4.
Referee Chris Rooney
Rooney previously skated alongside fellow ref Graham Skilliter earlier in the playoffs, having combined forces at MIN/DAL Game 2, BOS/FLA Game 3, TOR/TBL Game 4, NYR/NJD Game 5, and SEA/COL Game 7 — along with FLA/TOR Game 2 (FLA W 3-2), DAL/SEA Game 3, and VGK/EDM Game 3 (VGK W 5-1) in the Conference Semifinals.
The South Boston refeee was paired up with ref Jean Hebert for SEA/DAL Game 7; that duo continued into the Conference Finals, skating at FLA/CAR Game 2 (FLA W 2-1 OT) and VGK/DAL Game 4 (VGK L 2-3 OT).
Referee Kelly Sutherland
Referees Kelly Sutherland and Trevor Hanson handled three games in the Conference Finals: DAL/VGK Game 1 (VGK W 4-3 OT), CAR/FLA Game 3 (FLA W 1-0), and VGK/DAL Game 6 (VGK W 6-0). This duo was paired up beginning in Round 2, where they took the ice for FLA/TOR Game 1 (FLA W 4-2), EDM/VGK Game 2 (VGK L 1-5), DAL/SEA Game 4, and NJD/CAR Game 5.
Sutherland previously worked Round 1 alongside referee Kendrick Nicholson, handling WPG/VGK Game 1 (VGK L 1-5), SEA/COL Game 2, NJD/NYR Game 3, NYI/CAR Game 5, and DAL/MIN Game 6.
Sutherland is working his 230th playoff game, most among active officials and fourth all-time, behind only Bill McCreary (297), Don Koharski (266), and Kerry Fraser (254). Tonight is also Sutherland’s 27th Stanley Cup Final game, tied for fifth all-time with Mickey Ion. Only Bill McCreary (44), Bill Chadwick (42), Andy van Hellemond (35), and Dan O’Halloran (30) have worked more.
This is Sutherland’s 10th trip to the Stanley Cup Final. Rooney is working his sixth, while linesmen Steve Barton and Kiel Murchison are each making their third Finals runs.
Standby Linesman: Scott Cherrey #50

* Numbers in orange represent ref’s ranking among active officials.
* Penalty Differential represents the absolute value of the variance of penalty calls by team per game. If Team A takes two more penalties (or two fewer) than Team B, this is a 2 Lower numbers indicate less variance between total penalties in a game – that is, a closer number of calls for both teams.
Playoff stats updated through June 12. Regular season stats have been updated through the end of the 2022-23 regular season.
