What Happened on Avs First Goal in Game 7 vs. Wild?

The Colorado Avalanche opened the scoring in their Game 7 match against the Minnesota Wild with a controversial – and confusing – goal. As Matt Duchene moved the puck into the crease, Colorado’s Jamie McGinn went flying into Minnesota goaltender Darcy Kuemper.  Nick Holden backhanded the puck into the nearly empty net.  The horn sounded.  The goal light went on. Referee Wes McCauley held up his hands to stop play.   He did not signal a goal. Re-watched Holden's goal 5 times. McCauley absolutely waives it off, Holden even decked Suter after it went in. Refs conferred allowed it....

Kings Force Game 7 on Controversial Goal

Game 6 between the San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings was a tight one.  Neither team was willing to give an inch.  The teams had piled up 20 minutes in penalties over the first 51 minutes of gameplay. With all those whistles, the most important one might have been the one that didn’t blow. Referee Chris Lee watched as Robyn Regehr’s point shot was tipped by Justin Williams right under goaltender Alex Stalock. Lee brough his whistle up, but didn’t blow, watching the puck.  With his positioning – smartly in front of the goal line and not behind...

Frozen Four: Post-Game with the Officials

When the final buzzer sounded, confetti – tons of it – poured from the rafters of the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, PA.  Union College had just claimed its first NCAA Men’s Hockey Championship with a 7-4 victory over Minnesota. The Union players hugged at center ice.  The Gophers hung their heads, some not moving from the bench, waiting for the formality of one of hockey’s greatest traditions: the post-game handshake. Taking it all in from across the ice were the game’s officials. The NCAA championship game was officiated by referees Ryan Hersey and Geoff Miller along with linesmen Tommy...

Avalanche Tie Game, Win in OT after Missed Call

A potentially-missed call kept the Wild from sealing their victory with an empty net goal.  Instead, the Avalanche tied the game seconds later (after a missed offside play) and went on to win in overtime. With Avs’ netminder Semyon Varlamov on the bench, the Wild looked to end the night with an empty netter. After they cleared the defensive zone, Minnesota’s Charlie Coyle raced for the puck with the vacated goal in his sights. On his way, his progress was impeded – call it a hold, call it interference – by Colorado’s Andre Benoit. Trouble in Denver. Charlie Coyle...

Referee Kozari Hit in Face by Puck

Steve Kozari is having an unfortunately eventful week of playoff hockey. First, he was hit in the chest by a deflected puck at Blue Jackets/Penguins. That was a close call for the visorless official. Saturday night’s puck came even closer. Kozari was helped off the ice by the Bruins’ trainer. After a TV timeout, he was right back on the ice. But should he have been? Seen tweets about Steve Kozari's toughness for coming back in a game after taking a puck in the face. But, was there a consussion protocol? — Dave Patterson (@sportsrefs) April 26, 2014 Each...
