Refs Bill McCreary, Don Van Massenhoven Take Ice Bucket Challenge

Referees all across North America are lending their support to ALS by taking part in the Ice Bucket Challenge.  The most recent two to step up were retired NHL refs Bill McCreary and Don Van Massenhoven. Bill McCreary The latest to go under the bucket was none other than the man, the myth, the moustache: Bill McCreary. McCreary has raised over $1,800 for ALS. Don Van Massenhoven The 23-year veteran official, who retired this past season, donned the stripes once more for the Ice Bucket Challenge. Who are Referee #35 and Linesman #85?

The last NHL official to be assigned #35 was referee Dean Warren, who last worked a game in 2008.  From time to time, though, that number still shows up on the back of a referee’s jersey.  Why? Who Is #35? That’s a funny question. No referee is #35, yet any referee can be #35. You could even have a #35 working every game on an NHL schedule.  It’s not assigned to any individual, but on any given night, any individual might be wearing it.
