Linesmen have it rough. They don’t get to have fun announcing calls like the referees do, and they often get caught up in plays along the blueline. Worse yet, they occasionally end up as unwilling participants in fights. Now it seems even faceoffs aren’t safe.
Linesman Derek Amell was taken out by an inadvertent slewfoot after dropping the puck late in Monday night’s game between the Colorado Avalanche and the Montreal Canadiens. As he moved from the faceoff dot, he was caught between the Habs’ Brendan Gallagher and Colorado’s Nate Guenin who were both racing for the loose puck.
Amell landed squarely on his back. After remaining on the ice for a few minutes, he skated off the ice with the Avs’ medical trainer.
The remaining on-ice officials – Wes McCauley, Dennis LaRue, and Kiel Murchison – worked as a three-man crew while Amell was sidelined.
Suprisingly, Amell returned to the ice prior to the end of the game. That’s a good sign for the veteran linesman. He’ll get the night off tonight – he’s not on the officiating schedule – so he can ice down that back after what was probably a rough morning.
