NHL Clarifies ‘Puck-In-Netting’ Rule on Disallowed Goals

Recently, the Columbus Blue Jackets scored a goal after the puck deflected into the netting. Over a minute of play elapsed and the goal was allowed to stand, much to the chagrin of Bruins’ play-by-play man Jack Edwards (story here). The Dallas Stars had a similar situation last month, where the Situation Room felt that too much time had passed, so they deferred to the on-ice crew. With concerns – notably those of Edwards above – the league thought it best to take a moment to revisit the specifics of the rule that covers what’s eligible for video review.  The...

Canada Coach Boucher Blasts Refs After Spengler Cup Loss

Team Canada nearly came back from a five-goal deficit in Tuesday’s Spengler Cup Tournament game against defending champions Geneve-Servette.  Their comeback hopes – and any possibility of avoiding elimination – were foiled by a late delay of game penalty.   Head coach Guy Boucher was happy to voice his displeasure after what ended up as a 6-5 loss for the Canadians. Boucher confronted the officials after the game. His comments were directed at Eichmann, who responds as Boucher heads off.  Linesman Roman Kaderli remains stoic and stone-faced as a fuming, screaming Boucher is venting just inches away. If you couldn’t...

LA Kings Call Out Oilers’ Scrivens for Illegal Knob

The Los Angeles Kings employed a bit of gamesmanship prior to the game-deciding shootout in Tuesday night’s match. With the score even at 3 and both teams failing to convert in round one of the post-game skills competition, Kings head coach Darryl Sutter called the officials over to the bench to address an issue.  One he hoped might rattle his opposition. The problem? Edmonton goaltender Ben Scrivens was playing with an illegally colored knob on his goal stick. Sutter knows the NHL rulebook, especially Rule 10.2, which says: 10.2 Goalkeeper’s Stick – In the case of a goalkeeper’s stick,...
