Pens’ Letang Penalized for Using Opponent’s Stick

When your stick breaks, you get desperate. It’s hard to defend — and nearly impossible to score — without one.   In those moments, you have a few options. You can struggle in the defensive zone and try to block shots.  You can grab a stick from a teammate.  You can head to the bench for a replacement. You cannot, though, play with an opponent’s stick, as Pittsburgh’s Kris Letang found out:  Letang was given two minutes for playing with an illegal stick, along with a minor for unsportsmanlike conduct by referees Mike Leggo and Eric Furlatt.  Here’s what the...

Retired NHL Referee Paul Stewart on Cross-Training Officials

A recent run of referee injuries has drawn attention to the NHL’s options when it comes to back-up officials.  In the playoffs, each game is assigned one standby official. In the Cup Finals, a referee and linesmen are both ready on standby in case of injury or illness.  For the most part, NHL officials are not interchangeable when it comes to those with the orange armbands and those without. Sportsnet’s Steve Dangle: Let’s Talk About Refs

Sportsnet’s Steve Dangle has never been shy about sharing his thoughts.  Last week, he set his sights on the NHL officials.  Dangle tackles bounces of officials, make-up calls, stare-downs, and the ejection of Winnipeg Jets head coach Paul Maurice.  From Sportsnet: Referees have been brutal lately. Hawks’ Rozsival Avoids Suspension For Zucker Hit

Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Michal Rozsival won’t be suspended for his hit on Minnesota Wild forward Jason Zucker during Sunday’s Stadium Series game.  The hit happened with 4:50 to play in the second period, with the Wild leading 4-0 over the Blackhawks.   Rozsival was given a five-minute major for interference, along with a game misconduct, by referees Chris Lee and Steve Kozari.  Zucker had to be helped off the ice.  After the game, Wild coach John Torchetti called it an ‘upper body injury’ and advised that Zucker had remained in the building, rather than having been sent to the...
