AHL Goalie Dislodges Net to Stop Two-Man Breakway

There are fewer things that make a goaltender feel more helpless than facing a two-man breakaway.  Bridgeport Sound Tigers goaltender David Leggio – having seen his share of odd-man breakaways – wasn’t going to sit idly by. No, he was going to take action, and brilliantly so. Ference was given a two-minute minor for an illegal check to the head  by referee Dennis LaRue, who had a perfect angle on the hit from just outside the blueline. The play took place at 14:03 of the second period.  Kassian was not injured on the play. The league has scheduled a phone hearing for Monday, which means Ference can expect...

Preds’ Volchenkov Suspended 4 Games for Headshot

Anton Volchenkov is the latest to receive supplemental discipline in what has suddenly become a very busy time of year for Stephane Quintal and the NHL’s Department of Player Safety.   The Nashville Predators defenseman will miss his club’s next four games. Volchenkov has been suspended for an illegal check to the head of Calgary Flames forward Michael Ferland. Ferland was making his NHL debut, which was cut short by Volchenkov’s hit.  The Flames forward saw 9:43 of ice before leaving the ice with an injury that was later diagnosed as a concussion. It could’ve been a clean hit...
