Players spend most of the game trying to avoid the attention of the officials. One KHL player went to extreme measures to get the referee’s attention in a recent game.
Lukas Kaspar, leading scorer for HC Ugra (Хоккейный клуб Югра), was injured blocking a shot in a game against Severstal. With Yugra unable to get control of the puck, the officials let play continue.
With his club already killing off a penalty and now further shorthanded due to his injury, Kaspar was desperate for a stoppage.
After looking at the officials, who’d yet to acknowledge his injury, Kaspar whipped his stick across the ice. It flew right past the head of referee Nikolai Akuzovsky (#18).
Akuzovsky sure noticed that. He handed the injured Kaspar a game misconduct for the play. Here’s the sequence, via KHL.ru:
Referees for the game were Nikolai Akuzovsky and Rafael Kadyrov. Linesmen were Andrei Matyusha and Evgeny Petrov
