Columbus Blue Jackets forward Derek MacKenzie has been suspended three games for a hit to the head of Phoenix Coyotes defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson.  The hit happened midway through a scoreless first period in the teams’ January 2nd game.

MacKenzie violently ran Ekman-Larsson into the glass, hitting squarely through the numbers.

No penalty was called on the play.  (Referees Ghislain Hebert and Kelly Sutherland, what game were you watching!?  You have to wonder what linesman Greg Devorski was thinking.  He had a clear view and can be seen watching the play – and the hit. )

MacKenzie’s suspension – the first of his career – will cost him $15,384.63.
