This week’s roundup covers a scary linesman injury in Montreal, the NHL’s first Finnish official, goals wiped out in New Jersey, Denver, and Ottawa, a former NHL defenseman’s debut in stripes in the ECHL, and a forfeited win in the QMJHL.
NHL
- Ottawa’s goaltender-interference challenge erased New Jersey’s apparent breakthrough on Monday: Jesper Boqvist’s third-period goal came off the board after review showed Cody Glass had pried the puck loose from under Linus Ullmark’s pads – a covered puck, and Rule 69.3 contact in the crease – preserving the Senators’ shutout bid at the time in a 4-1 win. [STR]
- Same game, first period: Anthony Mantha’s five-minute major for boarding sent Nikolas Matinpalo head-first into the boards and out of the game with an upper-body injury — but Mantha got no game misconduct, returned for the second period, and Player Safety had announced no supplemental discipline as of Sunday night. Why a boarding major that injures doesn’t automatically eject. [STR]
- A scary scene in Montreal on Tuesday: linesperson Ryan Daisy (#81) had his left leg fold underneath him when Buffalo’s Jiri Kulich crashed into him after a faceoff, and he was helped off the ice by Canadiens forwards Jake Evans and Owen Beck, unable to put weight on the leg. The game finished with a three-man crew with Tommy Hughes working the lines solo. There has been no official update on Daisy’s condition. The injury came exactly ten years to the day after his NHL debut. [STR]
- History in Detroit on Tuesday: Onni Hautamäki became the first Finnish official in NHL history, making his debut on his 31st birthday at Devils vs. Red Wings – including a solo rookie lap on the ice. Sportsnet’s profile traces the road from Liiga (357 games, two linesperson-of-the-year awards) through a five-game AHL audition and the 2026 Olympic gold-medal game, where he was the only non-NHL official on the ice
- Disallowed Goal Night in Denver: Colorado scored four times in Wednesday’s game against Dallas and only two counted – Jaden Schwartz’s opener was erased on a successful Stars offside challenge (T.J. Hughes preceded the puck), and Gabriel Landeskog’s was wiped out on a video review for a distinct kicking motion under Rule 37.4. Jared Bednar’s review of the review: “I don’t see a kicking motion there.” [STR]
- Ottawa got the review treatment the next night: two first-period Senators goals against the Islanders came off the board — Warren Foegele’s never fully crossed the line after glancing off Semyon Varlamov’s shoulder and the crossbar, and Stephen Halliday’s was erased on a successful Islanders offside challenge. The Senators won anyway, 2-1 in a shootout [Reuters]
- Goaltender interference, backwards: Blues goalie Joel Hofer left his crease and bodied Kirill Kaprizov behind the net late in Minnesota’s 5-4 win on Thursday, drawing a two-minute interference minor while Kaprizov went down the tunnel for evaluation. Head coach John Hynes said afterward that he’s OK. Wild goalie Jesper Wallstedt called it “a dirty play” and wondered why goalies don’t get the same protection in reverse [Bring Me The Sports]
AHL & ECHL
- From the blue line to the stripes: former NHL defenseman Kevin Connauton worked his first professional game as a referee on Friday, wearing #56 for the New Mexico Goatheads’ franchise debut against Idaho in a sold-out Rio Rancho — just six months after playing the final game of a career that included 360 NHL games. He partnered with veteran Emile Charron; Idaho spoiled the party 4-1 in a 14-penalty game. [STR]
Juniors
- A win that wasn’t: the QMJHL overturned Blainville-Boisbriand’s 6-2 win over Victoriaville from October 12 into a forfeit loss after the Armada iced affiliate defenseman Mathieu Généreux without filing the required paperwork — under Article 10 of R-5, an ineligible player means a forfeit. Victoriaville takes the two points; the individual stats stand [The Hockey News]
- A busy week for USHL discipline with seven suspensions in six days: Lincoln’s Brady Sloper got two games for head contact and teammate Brady Cunningham one for a gross misconduct (Oct 12); Fargo’s Wilson Boumedienne drew two for cross-checking, Sioux Falls’ Wade Weil one as the aggressor, and Muskegon’s Alex Smyth one for removing an opponent’s helmet (Oct 16); and Chicago’s Cole Peters got two for cross-checking while Lincoln’s Will Prowse took one for butt-ending (Oct 17) [USHL]
College & Grassroots
- Twenty years old and already in the AHL: Harry Smith, a former Caledon Admirals defenseman who played in the OJHL in 2024-25 and has officiated in the league since, worked his first professional game as a referee on Friday, handling Rochester at Hamilton. Smith started officiating at 14 while still playing — the OJHL-to-AHL jump in about a year is the grassroots pathway working exactly as designed. [OJHL]
International
- Switzerland’s diving crackdown continued: SCL Tigers teammates Julian Schmutz and Santtu Kinnunen and SC Bern’s Tristan Scherwey were each fined CHF 2,000 for embellishment under IIHF Rule 64, all for incidents in October 9 games — the latest batch in a season-long run of retroactive diving fines in the National League [swisshockeynews.ch]
- Genève-Servette forward Johnny Kneubuehler was suspended one game and fined CHF 2,500 for kneeing Ambrì-Piotta’s Tommaso De Luca on Saturday. He was ejected in the 17th minute, and De Luca scored on the ensuing five-minute power play. Kneubuehler misses Tuesday’s game against Lugano [swisshockeynews.ch]
- A sucker punch with more to come: HC Ajoie’s Daniel Carr drew two five-minute majors and two game misconducts on Friday for punching EHC Biel’s Gaëtan Haas again while Haas was already down, and the league has opened proceedings for a “Fighting – Sucker Punch” offence. Carr was provisionally suspended for Saturday’s game, with further discipline still pending as of Sunday [swisshockeynews.ch]
- In the SHL, Brynäs defenseman (and former Detroit Red Wing) Robert Hägg was suspended three games and fined 20,500 kronor for sucker-punching Växjö’s Olivier Nadeau in the back of the head during a goalmouth scuffle on Saturday. No penalty was called on the play; the disciplinary committee ruled it a deliberate blow to the neck of a player who couldn’t defend himself [Detroit Hockey Now]
Fines & Suspensions
- Columbus forward Mathieu Olivier was fined the $5,000 maximum for slashing Florida’s Uvis Balinskis between the legs on Tuesday — the on-ice call was a five-minute major and a game misconduct, Florida scored on the power play on its way to a 7-3 win, and Balinskis was uninjured and finished the game. It’s the first supplemental discipline of Olivier’s career, and he apologized to his teammates postgame: “I don’t even have an explanation for it.” The ruling is final — and it was the NHL’s only fine or suspension of the week [The Hockey News]
