Update 2/2/15: The NHL’s Department of Player Safety will not be assessing any supplemental discipline to Backes for the hit.
After a violent hit from behind on Capitals’ defenseman Karl Alzner, St. Louis Blues captain David Backes may be the next to get a call from the NHL’s Department of Player Safety.
The hit happened 5:35 into the second period of Sunday’s game with the teams tied at one. Backes hit Alzner from behind, driving his head into the glass and opening a gash above the blueliner’s left eye. Backes was given a boarding major by referees Gord Dwyer and Francois St. Laurent. That call also includes a game misconduct, meaning Backes was done for the night.
The Blues were able to kill off the major penalty. They went on to win the game 4-3 without Backes.
We’ll wait to hear from the Department of Player Safety on how much longer, if at all, they’ll be without their captain in the lineup.
