Kerry Fraser on Heckling (via TSN)

In his latest C’mon Ref column, former NHL referee Kerry Fraser tackles the effect heckling has on a referee and if (how?) it influences his decisions and calls.  He begins: In theory the objective of every sports official is to remain focused and in the moment, regardless of mistakes that have been made. Dwelling on a missed/wrong call or to be intimidated by the fallout from players, coaches and of course, the fans is a recipe for a ref to compromise his integrity and/or commit further errors. It is best to keep all mental thoughts in perpetual motion to...

Mysterious Calls on NHL.com

Courtesy of the hawk-like vigilance of Melissa (@blknblueshirts) comes this ‘questionable’ penalty summary on NHL.com: A two-minute double-minor for butt ending?  Interesting… Umberger getting a penalty against Jonas Brodin for being late on ice?  Was Brodin feeling stood up? It wasn’t just limited to Jackets/Wild.  Some crazy calls also came up in Ducks/Hawks:   UPDATE:  Looks like the NHL.com gremlins were exposed to sunlight, as the site’s been updated with the correct penalties.  Damn.   Ruining all the...

Panthers Goal Disallowed on Intent to Blow

Panthers forward Jonathan Huberdeau battled in front of the Winnipeg net.  Fighting off three defenders, he pushed the puck past Jets netminder Ondrej Pavelec to tie the game.  Or so he thought. Referee Paul Devorski felt otherwise. The veteran official lost sight of the puck.  Despite confirmation from the NHL’s war room that it was a good goal, Devorski waved it off, citing his ‘intent to blow’ the whistle on the play. Pavelec never had control of the puck.  It was never covered.  Devorski had no business intending to blow the play dead. Kerry Fraser once suggested that referees...

High Sticks Giveth, Taketh Away for Stars

It was a tale of two high sticks in the Stars/Leafs game on Thursday, December 5. The first happened midway through the third period, when Shawn Horcoff tipped in what would’ve been the game tying goal.  Referee Jean Hebert immediately waved off the goal, stating that it was deflected by a high stick.  Video review confirmed the call. From the NHL: At 9:42 of the third period in the Stars/Maple Leafs game, video review upheld the referee’s call on the ice that Vernon Fiddler’s shot was deflected by Shawn Horcoff’s high stick into the Maple Leafs net.   According to Rule...

Will Pacioretty Suffer a Shana-ban for Hit on Boychuk?

With their long-standing rivalry, any Bruins-Canadiens matchup is always a tough battle. It was worse for Boston defenseman Johnny Boychuk, who found himself on the receiving end of an awkward hit by Montreal’s Max Pacioretty. Referee Dave Jackson’s arm went up immediately.  Pacioretty was given a two-minute minor for boarding. Boychuk remained on the ice for nearly ten minutes before being taken off on a stretcher and brought to the hospital for evaluation. Zdeno Chara and Milan Lucic help paramedics get Johnny Boychuk up onto the stretcher & he's wheeled off the Bell Centre. Scary #BruinsTalk — Joe Haggerty...
