Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Brett Pesce was just looking to get the puck in deep. Instead, he hit a zebra.
Pesce caught veteran referee Dean Morton with a dump-in during Tuesday’s game against the Florida Panthers.
Morton did not appear to be injured on the play. He remained in the game.
A veteran official, Morton, 52, made his NHL debut on November 11, 2000. He has since gone on to work 923 regular season games along with five playoff matches. The native of Peterborough, Ontario, also officiated the 2019 NHL All-Star Game in San Jose.
Referees for the game were Morton (#36) and Wes McCauley (#4). Linesmen were Tony Sericolo (#84) and Brandon Schrader (#85).
