Positioning is everything.

For an official to make the right call, he needs to be in the best position to watch the play. NHL Ref Trevor Hanson found himself well-positioned behind the net to see a goal that wasn’t visible on replay. An Olympic referee went one step further to keep an eye on the puck.

Olympic referee Tobias Wehrli opted for a bird’s-eye-view of the play late in the first period of Friday’s match between the United States and Slovakia.

The puck never crossed the line, and nobody knew that better than Wehrli.
