The NHL shared a look from ice level of Game 5 between the Washington Capitals and New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Referee Kevin Pollock, who made the no-goal call after Joel Ward made contact with Henrik Lundqvist is the star of this clip.
Pollock, along with referee Wes McCauley and linesmen Brian Murphy and Derek Nansen, discuss the goal disallowed due to incidental contact by Joel Ward. “I don’t believe this is a good goal,” says one. “It’s not,” says another. “Too greasy.” Pollock sums up the consensus decision: “He can’t play his position. We’re gonna go outside. No penalty.”
The official announcement is made. “We have no goal on the play. Goalie cannot play his position. Faceoff outside [the zone].”
Pollock elaborated on the call to captains Ryan McDonagh and Alex Ovechkin. “Henrik cannot play his position,” said Pollock. “He tried to make the save. Wardo’s body eliminated him.”
“Hey Barry, I was right there,” Pollock later told the Caps’ head coach. “I made the call all the way.”
