The 2014 IIHF World Championship begins May 9 in Minsk, Belarus.  Games run through May 25.  Some officiating assignments of note:

USA

This is Keith Kaval‘s third straight Men’s World Championship; he also worked the tournament in 2012 and 2013. Prior to that, he covered the World Juniors in 2010 and 2011.

Steve Patafie, who recently retired from the ECHL, is working his fourth international event. He’s also officiated the 2013 Spengler Cup, 2013 World Juniors, and 2012 Men’s World Championship.

Linesman Paul Carnathan has also seen international action in the 2011 Men’s World Championship, 2010 World Juniors, and IIHF qualifying tournaments.

Canada

Canada’s officiating representatives are linesmen Chris Carlson and Jesse Wilmot.  Both have worked two previous Men’s World Championships.   This is the first time in the past 10 years that a Canadian referee has not participated in the IIHF Men’s World Championship.

International

Russian official Konstantin Olenin, one of the KHL’s top officials,  is working his fifth straight Men’s World Championship.  We spoke with Olenin earlier this year as he was preparing for Sochi.

Linesman Ivan Dedioulia will be working the World Championships for the first time in his home country of Belarus. He has officiated every IIHF Men’s World Championship since 2007.

NHL fans may remember Swedish referee Marcus Vinnerborg. He spent two seasons in the NHL before returning home to continue his officiating career in Sweden.
