The Montreal Canadiens needed six rounds of a shootout to beat the Detroit Red Wings 1-0 on Saturday night after having three apparent goals taken off the board across regulation and overtime.

Goal 1 – Caufield, 1st Period, 1:16

Cole Caufield’s shot from along the goal line was called a goal on the ice. After a lengthy video review, the call was reversed: the puck did not completely cross the goal line.  This was a league-initiated review; teams can’t challenge puck-over-line.

Goal 2 – Bolduc, 2nd Period, 7:03

Zachary Bolduc’s shorthanded tally was waved off immediately on the ice. Jake Evans was in the crease interfering with goaltender Daniil Tarasov as Bolduc’s shot came through from the right faceoff circle.   There was minimal minimal contact, but a goal can be disallowed for a player in the crease even if there’s no actual contact.  The referees waved this one off on the ice; the Canadiens opted not to challenge to try to overturn the call.

Goal 3 — Texier, Overtime, 2:37

We’re not done yet! Alexandre Texier’s apparent overtime winner was overturned on an automatic Coach’s Challenge, after video review showed Bolduc was offside on the zone entry.  Detroit head coach Todd McClellan didn’t need to challenge this one. All challenge-eligible plays in the final minute of regulation or any point in overtime are automatically reviewed by the league’s Situation Room.

Three disallowed goals in one game ties the modern-day single-team record, set by Edmonton in 2023.

Not only that – this game hit for the cycle, with disallowed goals in three categories:

  • Puck-over-line
  • Goaltender interference
  • Offside

Bolduc got the last word, scoring in the sixth round of the shootout for the winner. Jacob Fowler made 30 saves for his second career shutout; Tarasov stopped all 30 he faced through 65 minutes, technically a shutout of his own.

“It’s hard to line back up for a face-off after thinking you win the game in front of 20,000 people,” Fowler said.

The Montreal Canadiens – who could’ve been up 3-0 in regulation – eked out a 1-0 shootout win over the Detroit Red Wings.  The officiating crew was referees Chris Rooney (#5) and Garrett Rank (#7), with linespersons Bevan Mills (#53) and Ryan Jackson (#84).

Lucas Raymond admitted Detroit caught breaks: “We got a couple of lucky bounces with those disallowed goals.”
