Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl has been fined $5,000 for what the NHL’s Department of Player Safety called a ‘dangerous trip’ on New York Islanders forward Bo Horvat.
At 9:49 of the second period, Draisaitl delivered a cross-check to the back of Horvat’s knee. Referees Dan O’Rourke and Carter Sandlak issued a minor penalty for tripping on the play.
Horvat was not injured on the play.
Draisaitl’s takedown appeared to be in response to a trip from Horvat moments earlier, where he appeared to kick out the skates of the Oilers forward.
The fine issued to Draisaitl is the maximum allowable under the CBA without a formal hearing. The Oilers’ forward will earn $8 million this season.
