Pittsburgh Penguins forward Bryan Rust opened the scoring against the Chicago Blackhawks on a shot that eluded goaltender Petr Mrazek — and the officials.

Rust deflected a Kris Letang shot on net. The puck deflected off the inner bar and dropped into the crease. Rust saw it go in. So did winger Lars Eller.  But nobody else on the ice did…

After a conveniently-timed icing from the Chicago Blackhawks, the on-ice officials huddled to discuss the play. A quick confirmation from the NHL’s Situation Room settled it: good goal, Penguins.

Nice to see the Situation Room in midseason form already!
