Toronto Maple Leafs forward Sam Lafferty has been fined $3,108.11 for cross-checking Ross Colton of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The infraction came with 4:50 remaining in the second period of Saturday’s game in Tampa.  Lafferty was given a minor penalty for roughing by referees Francis Charron and Jake Brenk.

Lafferty’s fine is the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement without a formal hearing.  His fine is the first of the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs, but the second disciplinary action taken this postseason by the NHL’s Department of Player Safety.  Toronto’s Michael Bunting was suspended three games for interference and an illegal check to the head.  While Bunting will miss time, he loses no money as a result of the ban; Lafferty, though, has to pay up.

The Toronto Maple Leafs won the game 4-3 in overtime to take a 2-1 lead in their playoff series. Officials for the game were referees Francis Charron (#6) and Jake Brenk (#26) with linesmen Brandon Gawryletz (#64) and Scott Cherrey (#50).
