This is what got Toronto’s Michael Bunting so fired up

Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Mikhail Sergachev has been fined $5000 for slashing Toronto Maple Leafs forward Michael Bunting.

The infraction came during the final seconds of the opening period during Tuesday night’s game in Toronto.  Sergachev delivered a slash to Bunting’s hand.

No penalty was called on the play.

Moments later. Tampa’s Pierre-Edouard Bellemare delivered a late hit on Toronto’s Mitch Marner, sparking a scrum in front of the Lightning net that resulted in matching minor penalties to each team. Bunting was escorted off the ice by linesman Dan Kelly following the exchange.

Sergachev’s fine is the maximum allowable under the CBA without a formal hearing, based on his annual salary of $4.8 million.

The Maple Leafs went on to win the game 4-1. Referees were Furman South (#13) and Jean Hebert (#15); linesmen were Steve Barton (#59) and Dan Kelly (#98).
