Calgary’s Mikael Backlund is the latest to be writing a check to the league for an illegal play on the ice.

The NHL’s Department of Player Safety has fined Backlund $5,000 for cross-checking Philadelphia’s Travis Konecny.  The hit came 11:53 into the first period of Tuesday’s game in Philadelphia.

Backlund was given a minor penalty for boarding.  Konecny was not injured on the play.
