Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid has been fined $5,000 for elbowing Montreal’s Jesperi Kotkaniemi.
McDavid was given a minor penalty for roughing by referee Chris Schlenker. Kotkaniemi was not injured on the play.

The Oilers captain has been suspended one previously in his 388-game NHL career, missing two games in 2019 for a head shot on New York Islanders defenseman Nick Leddy.
McDavid’s fine is the maximum permissible under the CBA without a hearing.
Don’t worry. He will financially recover from this. McDavid is earning $14MM this season, based on a combination of salary and signing bonus. Based on an 82-game schedule, he earns $170,731 per game. With an average time on ice of 22:19 per game this year, the Oilers center is earning $7,656 per minute – or $127 per second – while he’s on the ice. He’ll out-earn his fine in one shift.
