Hurricanes forward Nino Niederreiter has been fined $5,000 for interference on Nashville Predators goaltender Juuse Saros.

This is the first disciplinary action from Player Safety involving goaltender interference since Nazem Kadri was suspended three games for interfering with goaltender Niklas Backstrom in 2013.

Niederreiter’s interference came on a hit behind the net at 4:50 of the first period of Tuesday’s game in Nashville.  Saros went behind the net to play the puck when the Canes’ forward delivered a body check to the Nashville netminder.  Niederreiter was given a minor penalty for roughing on the play by referee Furman South.

Saros left the game for evaluation.  No word on his status; the Predators’ next game is Thursday against the Florida Panthers.

Niederreiter’s fine of $5000 is the maximum allowable under the CBA.
