The SHL has suspended forward Lias Andersson for five games for an illegal check to the head.

Andersson, whose NHL rights are held by the New York Rangers, is currently skating with HV71 in Sweden.

Andersson’s hit on Luleå’s Jonas Berglund came with 9:32 remaining in the second period.  Berglund cleared the puck out of the defensive zone moments before Andersson move in from the side.  The HV71 forward stepped into Berglund, driving his shoulder into his opponent and making contact with the player’s head.

Berglund left the ice and did not return to the game.

No penalty was called on the play.

Andersson will sit for his club’s next five games.  In addition, Andersson has been fined approximately $9,000 US Dollars.
