Referee Garrett Rank was injured during the third period of Sunday’s game between the San Jose Sharks and New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Rank was hit by a dump-in from San Jose defenseman Erik Karlsson.

Rank left the game and did not return due to what the NHL called “an upper body injury.”
The remainder of the game was handled by referee Tom Chmielewski and linesmen David Brisebois and Jesse Marquis.
There’s no word on the severity of the injury or whether Rank will miss any additional time.
