Anaheim’s Josh Manson will not receive any supplemental discipline as a result of his hit on Florida’s Reilly Smith.
As Smith entered the offensive zone on a Panthers power play, Manson stepped up, sending the Panthers forward flying.
Smith did get back to his feet and rejoin the play. He did finish the game.
No penalty was called by referees Jean Hebert and Kelly Sutherland.
Per Rule 48 in the NHL rulebook, an illegal check to the head is defined as:
A hit resulting in contact with an opponent’s head where the head was the main point of contact and such contact to the head was avoidable is not permitted.
The hit was determined to be a legal full body check. While there was head contact, the head was not the main point of contact on the play.
