Los Angeles defenseman Tom Gilbert will miss the next three games after his phone hearing with the NHL’s Department of Player Safety. The Kings blueliner has been suspended for three games for boarding Anaheim Ducks forward Nick Ritchie. He’ll forfeit $23,333.34 in salary.
Gilbert was not penalized on the play. He did receive a roughing minor – as did Anaheim’s Corey Perry – for an altercation following the play.
Gilbert’s dangerous hit appeared to be in retaliation for a check delivered by Ritchie on Gilbert earlier in the shift.
The NHL’s Department of Player Safety admitted that Ritchie put himself in a vulnerable position, but put the onus on Gilbert to avoid following through on the check. Instead, Gilbert drove right through the numbers. The force of the impact caused Ritchie’s head to bounce off the glass.
Gilbert has been fined once before, then with the Montreal Canadiens, losing $2,500 for a hit on Matt Stajan in 2010.
