Referee Rob Martell is calling it a career. On Saturday night, when the Minnesota Wild faced the Tampa Bay Lightning, he took the ice for the 1000th and final time in the National Hockey League. Martell worked alongside referee Dan O’Halloran and linesmen Brian Mach and Andy McElman.
Martell, 53, is a 20-year veteran official. The Winnipeg native officiated his first NHL game on April 7, 1996, handling a matchup between the New York Islanders and Ottawa Senators way back in in the days when referees worked solo.
