Referee Justin St. Pierre didn’t like Charlie Coyle’s elbow on Winnipeg’s Mark Scheifele. Neither should the NHL’s Department of Player Safety.

Though nothing’s been announced, the Minnesota Wild forward should expect a call after his intentional elbow on Scheifele. The hit came in the final minute of the second period of Monday night’s game, with the Wild trailing 0-2.

St. Pierre’s arm went up immediately, and Coyle was sent off with a minor for elbowing. Scheifele was not injured on the play and remained in the game.

With an intentional elbow coming to an unsuspecting opponent, this doesn’t appear that much different from the elbow that earned New Jersey’s Scott Gomez a major penalty and a fine. A suspension might not be coming, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t. We’re expecting a fine for this one.
