Referee Chris Rooney Injured; Out for World Cup, NHL Season

Referee Chris Rooney will miss the World Cup of Hockey as well as the start of the NHL season.   The veteran official suffered a torn Achilles tendon while at training camp in Buffalo. Rooney was taking part in fitness testing at the NHL’s Exposure Combine, which included amateur officials and the NHL and IIHF officials selected to work this year’s World Cup. “It was during a shuttle run and it just popped,’’ Rooney told the Boston Globe’s Kevin Paul Dupont. “I was doing the test for, oh, maybe 10-12 minutes . . . and, pop, it tore right off. IIHF and NHL Officials Partner for World Cup Pre-Tournament Games

We’ve already seen which NHL referees and linesmen will be working the World Cup of Hockey, which kicks off September 17 in Toronto. The IIHF and NHL have just announced the officials working the pre-tournament games in Europe. The pre-tournament round, from September 8-14, will include four exhibition games in Europe and eight in North America.  The four European games will include mixed officiating crews with NHL and international officials working the games.   Each game will feature an NHL referee and linesman partnered with an IIHF referee and linesman.
