Penalties in the NHL All-Star Game

Referees Ian Walsh and Dan O’Rourke are ready to go, as are linesmen Vaughan Rody and Jonny Murray.  The quartet will be hitting the ice in Nashville as this year’s All Star Game officials. We know the linesmen will be busy, watching for offsides and handling most of the faceoffs, but what about the referees?  Aside from stopping the play and pointing to goals, how much work will they have to do?  When it comes to the whistles, they can pretty much leave them in the locker room. All-Star Penalties Penalties have become very rare in the All-Star Game....

Flames’ Wideman Crosschecks Linesman Don Henderson

What was Dennis Wideman thinking?  Perhaps he was frustrated that the officials didn’t call a penalty when Nashville’s Miikka Salomaki hit him into the boards moments earlier.  Maybe he was still shaking the cobwebs out as he skated toward the bench. Whatever was going on, Wideman screwed up. There’s no excuse, no possible justifiable explanation for crosschecking an official, as Wideman did to veteran linesman Don Henderson on Wednesday night: Moments prior, Wideman was checked hard into the boards by Nashville’s Miikka Salomaki. Wideman got up slowly, heading directly to the bench – and directly into linesman Don Henderson....

Flyers’ Simmonds Has Goal Challenged for Offside

Coach’s challenges have been a mixed blessing.  Proponents are glad to see the right call being made. Opponents are willing to cede a bit of accuracy with the understanding that, occasionally, breaks – or mistakes – will go either way.  As any official will tell you, their goal is to make the right call.  If it takes review to get it done, so be it.  Boston Bruins head coach Claude Julien challenged the Flyers’ opening goal in Monday night’s game, arguing that they play was offside.  Philadelphia’s Jakub Voracek carried the puck over the blue line as defenseman Michael Del...

NHL Announces All-Star Game Referees & Linesmen

The stage is set. The venue is ready, as are the players — who’ll be outfitted in black and white (Nice color choices, by the way).  We’ve even got the celebrity coaches.  Now all we need are the officials.    Referees Ian Walsh and Dan O’Rourke have been selected to officiate the 2016 NHL All-Star Game in Nashville with linesmen Vaughan Rody and Jonny Murray.    Walsh, 43, a Philadelphia native, worked his first game on October 14, 2000. He’s since worked 887 regular season games along with 16 playoff games. Walsh made the postseason four consecutive seasons from...

Finnish Linesman Kicked In Chest After Hit

Teemu Aalto plays defense for Tappara of the Finnish League. The team name translates roughly to ‘battle axe’, which accurately describes what one on-ice official was facing in today’s game. A hit from Aalto on Jiri Vestola of the Tampere Ilves (Lynx) had a dangerous result. Not only was Vestola injured on the play, but the linesman nearly was as well.  As he flipped in the air, Veistola’s skate hit linesman Pasi Nieminen in the chest, knocking him to the ice.  While Veistola was helped off the ice, Nieminen appeared to avoid injury on what was a very...
