Kimmerly, Vinnerborg Work Spengler Cup Gold Medal Game

Congratulations to Canada on winning the 2015 Spengler Cup.  Team Canada defeated Swiss club HC Lugano by a score of 4-3, wrapping up a perfect 4-0 record for the Canadians in the tournament.  This is Canada’s 13th Spengler Cup win, their first since 2012. The gold medal game of the 89th Spengler Cup tournament took on a decidedly NHL flavor.  The Canadian club was led by four former NHLers on the scoresheet — Keaton Ellerby, Derek Roy, Tom Pyatt and Matt D’Agostino all scored in the victory.   Even the referees both had NHL experience.  Current NHL referee Greg...

Bruins’ Marchand Faces Hearing for Borowiecki Hit

Bruins forward Brad Marchand will have a hearing for clipping Mark Borowiecki of the Ottawa Senators in Tuesday’s game in Boston.  The hit came midway through the first period of play. Referee Martell Works Solo After Weather Delay Grounds Meier

The NHL switched to a two-referee system back in 2000.  Since then, all games — barring injury or travel issues — have been worked by a four-man crew.   On Sunday, it was old-school officiating when the Dallas Stars took on the St. Louis Blues.   Referee Rob Martell found himself as the lone man in the orange armbands for Sunday night’s tilt, as Brad Meier was unable to make it to the game.  A severe weather system that caused flash flooding and spawned nine tornadoes affected much of the Dallas area, with impacts as far as Illinois.  As...

Close Call on Team Canada’s No Goal at World Juniors

After dropping their opening match of the 2016 World Juniors to Team USA, Canada was looking for a strong start to Monday’s game against Denmark.  They did just that, with what was nearly the opening goal of the game in the first minute of play.  Lawson Crouse’s shot danced across the goal line before Denmark’s Alexander True cleared it out of the crease.   The officials made no call on the ice. Referee Daniel Konc signaled that he’d be calling upstairs for review.     After review, it was determined that the puck never crossed the line.  No goal,...
